For the last several weeks, a conservative organization called One Million Moms has relentlessly attacked JCPenney for starting up a partnership with Ellen DeGeneres. The group called on JCPenney to fire Ellen as their spokesperson because she’s gay.
Their campaign never stood a chance, as hundreds of thousands of people joined JCPenney, GLAAD and other organizations in garnering support for Ellen online and simultaneously raising awareness about the hardships LGBT people face in the workplace. For example, GLAAD pointed out through this campaign that you can be fired in 29 states just for being gay, and in 34 states just for being trans*.
Finally, One Million Moms has backed down and backed off. The director of the group essentially said there are other things to worry about and this isn’t worth their time anymore. Not to mention how many people in the country are now completely against this group for their hateful speech and actions - yeah, maybe that was part of it too.
“Turns out ‘1 million’ antigay activists just can’t compare to the millions more — moms, dads, sons and daughters alike — who agree with JCPenney that no person should be fired simply for being gay,” said GLAAD spokesman Herndon Graddick. “As a result of this failed attempt to oust Ellen, more people than ever are now speaking out against the injustices faced by hardworking LGBT Americans in the workplace.”
Love, fairness and equality will always win. Ellen’s an absolute rock star and I’m so glad the majority of the world realizes it.
